Handouts and Updates from Social Isolation Presentation

On February 17th, the UW Bothell School of Nursing Students hosted an in person and online event to discuss Social Isolation and the impact to health. Over 45 people registered to participate in this important topic. Unfortunately, technology tripped us up, and the presentation was difficult to hear for those who joined by Zoom. Fortunately for us, the students graciously re-recorded their presentation which is now available on NNN’s YouTube channel! Click this link to see and hear the presentation. You may also copy and paste this address into your web browser: https://youtu.be/ykP7PyYAy-8. When viewing the video, you can turn on closed captioning by clicking on the "cc" at the bottom of the screen once the presentation begins playing.

Takeaways:

In person attendees were able to discuss their feelings and share ideas after the main presentation. Feedback from those attendees included steps they plan to take (or have taken) to combat social isolation. Ideas they shared:
“I’m going to contact some of the resources and people to learn more rather than thinking it’s just too hard."
“I am going to make connections and go out more.”
“I’ve started walking for an hour with my neighbor, and I’m going to look for better ways to support friends with other barriers.”
“I’m going to acknowledge that others are experiencing pain and frustration and look for ways to help.”
“It helps to know that others are struggling with this sense of isolation too and are sharing ways to turn it around.”

Handouts:

The students also provided two handouts you may find helpful. One is a list of resources for you to explore to help yourself and others avoid the pitfalls of becoming socially isolated. The other is a one page 'At a Glance' reminder about signs to watch for if you are experiencing social isolation and some steps you may take to combat those behaviors. If you’d like a copy of the handouts, please contact Social@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.org or call 253-237-2848. Feel free to share any of the materials, including the link to the presentation, with others.

Many thanks to Dr. Robin Fleming for her leadership of this ongoing series of Community Conversations that focus on improving the health and safety of seniors in our community. We also thank each of the students who participated in developing this topic and for their time in creating thoughtful information for us to consider.

Future
Topics?

If you have topics you’d like us to add to these Community Conversations (such as more discussions about combatting social isolation), please send your ideas to Social@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.org or call 253-237-2848.

Social Committee News - Coming Soon: Let's play Mahjong!
Have you played before but want to brush up your skills? New to the game? Are you an expert looking for fellow players? Now's the time to sign up! Join volunteer Jackie S. to learn how to play this rummy-like game, played with tiles, rather than cards. Jackie will start with the first group of four in late April or the first week of May. Sign up is required - the first four to sign up will be in the first group. If more are interested, we'll keep a waiting list and expand the group as time permits.

What to expect:
·Before the lessons begin, each player needs to purchase one Mahjong card that will be used throughout the year. Each card costs $9.00 for the standard size (smaller print) or $10.00 for the (large print version).
·If you prefer, NNN can order the cards for the group, and you can repay us at time of registration. Wait until you have a confirmed spot to purchase your card.
·While learning, meet once a week for 3 or 4 sessions that will last about 1.5-2 hours once everyone has a card (estimating late April or early May)
·Second learning group can start about a month after the first group
·Meeting location will be shared once we've confirmed site availability (most likely in Shoreline)
·FUN! MEETING OTHERS! LEARNING A NEW AND INTERESTING GAME!

If you want to order your own card,  click on order now or paste this URL in your web browser to get to the National Mahjong League site: https://www.nationalmahjonggleague.org/store.aspx#
Sign Up by emailing social@northwestneighborsnetwork.org or call 253-237-2848.

Coming Soon! Making Cards with Ginger
Feeling crafty? Join fellow NNN Member, Ginger H. for an afternoon of fun and conversation making your own greeting cards. Yes, you will get to take the cards you make home! Ginger has graciously offered to host this event in her Shoreline home. She’ll provide virtually all of the things you need to make your own personal greeting card(s), including her expert guidance! No experience necessary! If you have a pair of small scissors and some double sided tape,  please bring those with you. Ginger wants you to know she is a non-smoker and she has a very friendly dog living in the house in case that would be an issue for you.

We’re working on finalizing the date, but we want to know who’s interested in coming to this fun afternoon. Please email Social@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork or call 253-237-2848 to let us know if you want to be added to the contact list. Space will be limited to up to 6 participants per session.

NNN wishes a very Happy Birthday to our members and volunteers born in March:

Mask Mandate Guideline Changes March 12 - Exceptions
With the COVID 19 mask changes coming March 12 for most indoor activities, watch for updates on how NNN continues to keep members and volunteers as protected as possible. For now, masks continue to be required for both volunteers and members when driving together. When wearing a mask is a choice, please continue to ask the other person which they prefer. We're all in this together!
The NNN Board will be meeting in March, and discussing with other village leaders what the best protocol is for transportation and in person services.
