Social Committee News - What Happened in December?

Wow! Take a Look at the Opportunities in January and February!

What a way to end the year and ring in 2022! Winter storms knocked us off our feet for a few days and we’re watching the Omicron virus trends. That said, we’re looking forward to getting back to walking, talking and sharing stories in 2022. In December, NNN offered 27 separate social activities, including a new opportunity to get together while enjoying a tasty hot beverage at Cafe Aroma.  On December 1st, a group of us enjoyed our docent tour of the National Nordic Museum. We learned about the culture and history of our region’s Nordic past and the influences that carry through today. Many of us stayed and enjoyed lunch at the Museum Cafe, and a few of us stopped and did a bit of browsing at the unique Nordic-themed gifts in the Museum shop!

January & February Opportunities

We had planned to begin indoor gatherings again in January, Omicron willing, but watching trends, have decided to wait until February. As always, please use your own judgment and comfort level when deciding to attend indoor gatherings. NNN follows CDC and Washington State Department of Health guidelines. Participants need to be able to show proof of current vaccination status and wear masks when meeting in person.

Please remember:  Before heading to an event, please check the Events page
to monitor any updates or changes in date, time or location. This news blast is FULL of options for our walks, our online meet-ups, and other community events. There's likely something perfect for YOU!

Walking for Fun, Good Health & Friendly Chats!

Do you know that just 15 minutes of daily walking can benefit every aspect of your health and well being?

Continued thanks to Margaret Houghtaling, Anne Guthrie and Sandy Moy for leading our walks. We had to cancel four walks after the storm system hit our area the week of December 26th, but we’re ready to start up again in 2022. Walks take place rain or shine. Walk at your own pace for as long or short as you want! Especially during the winter season, please check out the Events Page to confirm if any times, days or locations have changed.

MORE FREE ONLINE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR MIND & BODY!

Are you interested in practicing gentle exercises to help you improve your balance, reduce pain, quiet the mind, experience a grounded and centered state using focused intent, breath, and body postures? Our sister Village, NEST, offers free online classes to all members of the public.

Feldenkrais Movement Class - Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11:00 am

These classes, led by Gail Thompson and Deonne Poston, use the Feldenkrais Method (both teachers) and Bones for Life (Deonne) of gentle movements to help students function with increased comfort, flexibility, and balance. Safe, relaxing, and varied movement lessons stimulate the brain’s neuroplasticity to increase awareness and explore options for how we use our bodies in sitting, reaching, walking, and other activities. Movements may help improve balance, reduce pain, and decrease peripheral neuropathy. No experience needed; lessons can be done in chairs (Tuesday) or floor (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Students should wear warm, comfortable clothing and use a flat-bottomed chair or a mat/blanket on the floor. Gail and Deonne send students weekly emails with Zoom links. If you’re interested in participating, please contact the NEST office to be added to the Feldenkrais mailing list. CALL: 206-525-6378 or send an email to: info@nestseattle.org

Mind, Body, Spirit, Healing, Community: Qigong – Thursdays at noon

Quiet the mind, experience a grounded and centered state using focused intent, breath, and body postures. Deeply relax and practice self-healing meditations in still (internal) and moving (external) forms. Virtual Class materials: floor space, armless chair/stool, comfy place to sit, stand, + lie down for relaxation forms. If your internet signal stretches and you have safe access to the outdoors with social distance, consider practicing with us in nature!

Take an Afternoon Coffee Break with NNN

Enjoy an afternoon break in the company of other NNN members on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays each month. Join one of our volunteer hosts, grab your favorite beverage and maybe a small snack and let’s enjoy visiting and relaxing together for a brief afternoon break.

To kick off 2022, weather and Omicron permitting, our first coffee of the year will be on January 25th at Cafe Louvre in Edmonds from 2:00-3:00.

Plan ahead! February dates:

February 8: Cafe Aroma, Shoreline
February 22nd: Third Place Commons, upper level,  Lake Forest Park.

Lunching Together with NNN

We enjoyed two lunches in December (The Family Pancake House in Edmonds and Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park). Due to concerns about the high infection rate of Omicron, we moved our lunch planned for Hopsndrops from January 7th to a date TBD. Fingers crossed the peak of transmission will be over soon and we'll be back to lunching together in no time! (Check the Events page for updates.)

Upcoming lunch spots:

Date TBD: Hops 'n Drops, Lynnwood
February 4: Aurora Borealis, Shoreline
February 18: Brier Pizza, Brier

Good news! We’re continuing our $5.00 members only “cash in your pocket”  lunch benefit in 2022! No restrictions other than you need to be a current member or volunteer with NNN and come enjoy lunch.

HELP WANTED! We need suggestions for lunch spots and/or hosts for 2022!  Have a lunch spot you love or are curious to try out? Email social@northwestneighborsnetwork.org. Interested in helping us host lunches? We could use your help! We’ll help you every step of the way. Please contact your Social team!

VOLUNTEERS! Join your peers at the Open Forum!

Ten volunteers got together over Zoom in our two Open Forum for Volunteers in December. Thanks to each for coming and sharing your ideas and helping us get to know each other a little better each time we meet. This is an informal forum only for current NNN volunteers to get to know each other and share volunteer experiences, ask and offer suggestions or ideas and learn what type of volunteer services seem to be most valued by our members. Grab a cup of coffee, tea, water - or come without. Let's have some fun and learn about our volunteer experiences! Click on the Zoom  link to join.

This month’s forum is on January 26th from 4:30-5:30 via Zoom. (February’s meeting is on the 23rd.)

Games with NNN

Join volunteer host Sharon Link on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday at Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park for GAMES WITH NNN AT THE COMMONS! Weather and Omicron permitting, we meet twice a month in the afternoons from 1:00-3:00. We’ll have at least 2 games (board, cards, dice, Dominoes) to choose from each time. Bring your own games if you want to share. Don’t know the rules of a game? No worries! We’ll learn together.

Upcoming dates: January 26th (check Events calendar in case of postponement), February 9, February 23.

NNN wishes a very Happy Birthday to our members and volunteers born in January: Fekerte K., Mary M., Dick M., Garnet R., Rickey S., Kathy S., Shannon S., Alda W. and Dan W.

NNN continues to serve our members and help them age well in their own homes. We follow the latest CDC guidelines to keep our members and volunteers safe. As always, if you need anything, please call our volunteer team at 253-237-2848 or email: Services@NorthwestNeighborsNetwork.org
