Do You Know How to Take Part in Redistricting Washington State?

Washington redraws the boundaries of voting districts every 10 years so they reflect our state’s changing populations. With the 2020 Redistricting Data summary files from the U.S. Census Bureau now in hand, the Washington State Redistricting Commission met Aug. 16 and agreed to a schedule of important dates and deadlines that will lead to the delivery of final Washington state legislative and congressional district maps by Monday, Nov. 15.

Important dates to note:

  • End of August – The DrawYourWA mapping tool will be live with the official Census Bureau redistricting data and the state’s adjusted data based on relocation of persons in state custody to their last known address for purposes of redistricting. The public will be informed as soon as the data has been uploaded.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 21 – Commissioners will each release their proposed state legislative district map.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 28 – Commissioners will each release their proposed congressional district map.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 5 (7 p.m.)  – Statewide Virtual Public Outreach Meeting to receive feedback on state legislative map proposals.
  • Saturday, Oct. 9 (10 a.m.) — Statewide Virtual Public Outreach Meeting to receive feedback on congressional map proposals.
  • Friday, Oct. 22 – Deadline to ensure full consideration of third-party map submissions by the commission.
  • Monday, Nov. 15 (11:59 p.m.) – Deadline for commission to submit final maps to the state Legislature.

Delta Variant Drives Dramatic Spike in Covid-19 Cases

Governor Inslee announced the return of the universal mask mandate, noting that everyone, including the vaccinated, will be required to wear masks in public places beginning Monday, August 23. Public places listed by the governor include restaurants, shops, or any other public-facing settings. "We loosened masking requirements at a time when our vaccination rate was growing quite rapidly and when our case counts were dropping quite rapidly," Inslee explained. "Unfortunately now both our case counts, and our hospitalizations are exploding."

OLYMPIA – COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are accelerating across the state of Washington, demonstrating the delta variant’s potential to unravel our hard-fought progress toward recovery. Unvaccinated people are being hit hardest, and public health officials continue to urge everyone who has not gotten fully vaccinated to do so immediately. Now is also the time to redouble efforts around the key behaviors that keep the virus from spreading.

All people should:
  • Wear a mask, watch distance, wash hands often, carry hand sanitizer, and enable WA Notify on phones
  • Keep gatherings small and outside whenever possible, and avoid any large outdoor gatherings like concerts, fairs or festivals
  • Stay home if sick or exposed to COVID-19, and get tested if they have symptoms

Local Activities/Events/News
The Edmonds Center for the Arts announced this week that it is joining other Pacific Northwest performing arts venues in requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination for entry to all performances and events in the theater. A proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours will also be accepted, the ECA said.

Masking is also required inside ECA, and all patrons, staff, and volunteers will be required to wear masks, except while actively eating or drinking, the ECA announcement said. Children under the age of 2 are not required to wear a mask. The ECA will open its 2021-22 season with live performances starting in September.

Phinney Neighborhood Association Presents: Solo Aging-Issues and Opportunities (Sept 21)
The demographic bulge known as the Baby Boom cohort is now more than halfway through the life continuum. A growing portion of this group is composed of “solos.”
These are individuals who cannot or choose not to rely on family to help navigate life events and make health decisions. Yet, solos are largely invisible and often misunderstood—even by those organizations who serve older adults. Planning for the second half of life is essential, but a lot of us don’t like to plan or know how to do it well. Existing planning tools tend to focus on the end of life, but neglect planning for health decisions and events that will likely occur during the “long middle.” Villages –that already serve older adults—are well positioned to identify and support solos.
This workshop will help Village members and others view solos using a different lens and develop the capacity to better support solos with planning and access to resources. September 21, 2021, 5:30-7:00 pm PT via Zoom. All are welcome! Registration: To register for the free session, contact the PNA Village at village@phinneycenter.org or 206-789-4559. You will be sent the Zoom link upon registration.
