NNN Book Club

Members, volunteers, and friends are welcome to join the NNN book club. We read for entertainment and enlightenment. We gather via Zoom at 1:30 pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month to talk about the book and life experiences that relate to it.

We try to choose books easily available in the King County and Sno-Isle Library systems rather than buying a new book monthly. Help is available for securing a book if needed.

The mix of media (paper, audio, electronic) chosen by our members makes for additional insights (and knowledge about how to pronounce, spell, define words) that adds to the pleasure of the discussions.

Books for 2026

  • January - His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, A Life by Jonathan Alter.  A comprehensive biography that portrays Jimmy Carter as a complex, often misunderstood figure, tracing his journey from a bookish child and naval officer to a president known for both political failures (like the Iran hostage crisis) and significant achievements (like the Camp David Accords and human rights advocacy).
  • February - Dinners with Ruth by Nina Totenberg. A Memoir on the Power of Friendships [good availability both libraries]
  • March -  The Light Eaters How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth   Zoë Schlanger. It takes tremendous biological creativity to be a plant. The Light Eaters is a deep immersion into the drama of green life and the complexity of this wild and awe-inspiring world that challenges our very understanding of agency, consciousness, and intelligence. [Availability good both libraries]
  • April - An Inconvenient Woman by Dominick Dunne. Jules Mendelson is wealthy. Astronomically so. He and his wife lead the kind of charity-giving, art-filled, high-society life for which each has been carefully groomed. Until Jules falls in love with Flo March, a beautiful actress/waitress. What Flo discovers about the superrich is not a pretty sight. [books, audio, ebook in  kc; audio and a 2 books in SnoHo]
  • May - There There by Tommy Orange.  PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A wondrous and shattering award-winning novel that follows twelve characters from Native communities - all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize.  [books and other formats available]
  • June - The Improbable Victoria Woodhull by Eden Collinsworth.  Vividly written and exhaustively researched, tells the story of a woman truly ahead of her time—a radical visionary who made defying mores a habit and brought to the fore societal and political issues still being addressed today. Neither a saint nor a villain, Woodhull emerges as an iconic, complex woman - an entrepreneur; lover of freedom; and a fiercely loyal family member whose political activism and suffragist legacy will cement her in history. [6 books and ebook in KC; audio at Snoho and a few books]
  • July - I'm Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself by Glynnis MacNicol. After New York City emptied out in March 2020, Glynnis MacNicol, aged forty-six, unmarried with no children, spent sixteen months alone in her tiny Manhattan apartment. The isolation was punishing. A year without touch. Enjoying yourself--as you are--is not something the world tells you is possible, but it is. Here's the proof. [Lot of books available, audio and ebook in KC; same for SnoHo]
  • August - James, A Novel, by Percival Everett. It's a retelling of Huck Finn from Jim's perspective, very popular and formerly impossible to get from the library. But it's now accessible! [Available KC, not SnoHo]
  • September - I talk about it all the Time by Camara Joof. Snapshots from the life of a black, queer Norwegian Woman. A testimony, an appeal, and a self-examination. Camara Lundestad Joof was born in Norway to a Norwegian mother and a Gambian father. The book depicts how the everyday racism she constantly experiences infects her days and controls her thoughts. [4 books available KC; no books in SnoHo]
  • October - How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill. About the Dark Ages and the start of Medieval times.Irish monks transcribed countless documents and literary works before they were destroyed by the Catholic Church during the misnamed Dark Ages. They defied the Church's judgment because they were dedicated to knowledge, not just religion. [KC 3 books; SnoHo has no books, has audio and ebooks]
  • November - An Immense World How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us by Ed Yong This book welcomes us into a previously unfathomable dimension--the world as it is truly perceived by other animals. Yong tells the stories of pivotal discoveries in the field, and also looks ahead at the many mysteries which lie unsolved.[short waiting lists both libraries]
  • December - Project Hail Mary  Andy Weir. Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission--and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. [very large wait lists both libraries]
