Join us this month to discuss the movie, Rental Family, starring Brendan Fraser. While a fictional story, it is based on the very real practice in Japan of hiring people to fulfill social roles or provide companionship such as renting a “friend” for meals, walks, or events.
Fraser plays a struggling actor who lands a gig working for one of these “rental family” agencies. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection. It is a funny yet heart-warming movie that is sure to make you smile.
Please watch the movie before our call. It's available on Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Apple TV, and Fandango. Some services may charge a small rental fee. You can also check with your library for the DVD or if it is streaming on Hoopla or Kanopy through their services.
