Message from Suzy Chandler, President of the Board

As we near the end of the year, your Board is reflecting on all of the friendships formed, and the continued expansion of the NNN community with more people involved in services and social activities. Thanks to the 160 people who have joined so far this year, and to all who have been with us over our almost six years!  We continue to strive to meet the needs of our community, ensuring we all benefit from the volunteer services which allow us to thrive in the place we call home.

Did you know our trusted volunteers are delivering over 400 services each month, with nearly 800 hours of their time shared with our community members? All of this while our teams behind the scenes are helping combat social isolation with walking events, online chats, phone call check-ins, lunch gatherings, games, volunteer information sessions, and more?

Have you been looking to volunteer more, or in a different way? With nearly 300 events so far this year, we always need more volunteers to help provide ideas, energy, and support. What hidden skills do you have that could help us continue to build our community? Reach out to our Volunteer Services Manager, Danielle danielle@northwestneighborsnetwork.org, or to me suzy@northwestneighborsnetwork.org if you want to learn more about how you can make a positive impact in your neighborhood.

Community Staff Member Update - Danie

Many people in our NNN community have reached out asking about Danie, our Director of Community Operations and Outreach. She’s been away from the office, and we are all  missing her and her smiling face.  Sharing this picture of Danie and Sandy at the NNN community Tea Party this summer and looking forward to when we can again enjoy her enthusiasm, energy, and brilliant ideas.  It is thanks to Danie that we've been able to attract so many wonderful volunteers and grown in so many other ways. Danie is away on family leave, and we don’t have an expected return date at this time. For additional information and to find out how you can help, her family has requested that we share this link to her GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/f555db7e.

Calling All Members

In order to continue building and improving NNN’s programs and services, your input and ideas are needed! There is a small team of folks who are calling members to ask how things are going, learn a bit more about how NNN has been helpful and what more we can be doing. If you are interested in joining the team of callers or if you would like to get your input in now, please contact danielle@northwestneighborsnetwork.org or call/text 253.237.2848 to let us know. Otherwise, when you get your call, we hope you will donate a few minutes of your time to provide your valuable feedback. And always, if there is any doubt as to whether or not the caller is really from NNN, do not hesitate to contact us to check before chatting with anyone on the phone.

Now for this month’s recipe:

Old Fashioned Freezable Apple Crisp - Prep: 20 Min, Cook: 40 Min

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

  • 1 cup melted butter

  • 3 cups apples, thinly sliced

Preheat Oven to 350°F. This ensures your apple crisp bakes evenly, and the topping gets perfectly golden brown.

Prepare Topping in a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined. Then, pour in the melted butter and stir until the mixture forms crumbly pieces. Set aside; it will become the topping for your apple crisp.

Prepare Apples by thinly slicing. You can leave the peels on or remove them. Thin slices ensure the apples cook evenly and become tender.

Assemble Crisp by lightly greasing an 8x8” pan. Arrange the sliced apples in the pan, and generously sprinkle the crumb topping over them, the topping will bake down.

Bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling. Let the crisp cool for 5 minutes before serving.  You can freeze for serving later.
