Message from Suzy Chandler, President of the Board

Summer Harvest Season

With summer days quickly marching on, it's amazing what happens to me when I'm surrounded by too many fresh fruit trees. I'm sure everyone familiar with harvesting has a story or two about their favorite picking techniques or family recipes to preserve the goodies! We’d love to hear yours, and share them in an upcoming newsletter.

This week, our cousins invited us over to pick a few figs from their tree. I forgot to ask how big the tree was and how we should get them safely home. I'm sure if I had asked the advice of my Grandma, she would have warned me about the

tree height, the falling fruit, and how much the bees loved the fruit. We set up the orchard ladder, dodged the missiles from above, and it was early enough in the day that the bees weren't too interested in us.

Once we got started, we filled up three boxes full of figs! Now what? I quickly found a favorite fig jam recipe (blueberry fig) after poring over family recipes, and it made me happy to think of the steaming hot stoves, canning jars, lids, but most importantly, the time together with aunts, grandmas, sisters, cousins, and friends. This time is like no other to share funny, silly and sad family memories and learn things we didn't talk about without the pressure cooker rattling in the background. Taking that time in the heat of the summer to build forever memories is something I always treasure!

By the way, as we were finishing up, my cousin says...

Oh hey, did you guys want some peaches, too? There's also ripe blackberries over by the gravenstein trees… Time to get out the pressure cooker and make some new memories.

Come on... Let's Walk & Roll!
Got stories to share? Interested in the lives of others? Or just want to get out in the fresh air for a little exercise? NNN has two weekly scheduled walks, plus a twice monthly one. The more folks who join us, the more options there are for some to walk briskly, some to meander.  Wheels are welcome as well... whether you push them or ride on them. We do it all. See dates and times below.
We walk. We roll. And, of course, we talk.  And we would be delighted if you would join us.  Bring a friend.  Walks are open to all.
Speaking of rolling: we do provide rides for members who need them.  So don't let lack of wheels keep you away.  And those with wheels who are willing to provide transportation, are encourged to join us as well.

We'd be delighted to add more regular walks each week. For this to happen, we need people who are willing to be hosts. All that is required is a willingness to share responsibility with a couple of other people so one of us is at every walk. If you have a park or byway where you would like to host a regular walk, please let us know. We'll work to find others willing to help.

Got Some Good Yarns?

If they are the kind of yarn one uses for knitting, we can find a home for them.  NNN member Kim S. uses skeins and scraps to make lap robes.  She can use any kind of yarn, any amount of it.  With cotton yarn, she makes dish clothes, which are colorful and handy to have around the kitchen. Needless to say, she has lap robes and dish clothes to give away. Please let us know if you would like some for yourself, a friend, or an organization.  Kim’s output is prolific.

If your yarns are good stories, we would love to hear them.  Please consider a visit from one of the NNN writers for an article in our news.  It could be your story or maybe a part of a set of tales for the website.

Lime-cilantro marinated flank steak with grilled pineapple-peach salsa  serves 3

1-2 pounds beef flank steak

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons coconut aminos (lower in sodium) or (substitute soy sauce or tamari)

2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

1-1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1-1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

Salsa:

small pineapple, peeled, cored, sliced 1/2” thick & 1 peach, peeled, pitted, cut into 1/2” slices

1/8 teaspoon nutmeg & salt to taste

Chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish

Place steak in a plastic bag and put in a shallow dish.  In a small bowl, stir together coconut aminos, honey, cilantro, lime juice and lemon juice.  Set aside 1T for the salsa.  Pour remaining marinade over the steak, turn bag to coat all sides.  Marinate in fridge, turning bag occasionally, for at least 2 hrs. or up to 24 hrs.

For Salsa, heat grill pan over medium-heat, add the pineapple and peach slices until softened and grill marks appear, 2-3 minutes per side.  Let cool.  Cut the fruit into 1/4 inch pieces. Combine the fruit, nutmeg and reserved 1T. Marinade in large bowl..  Cover and chill.

Heat large skillet over medium-high heat.  Sear the steak, turning once, until browned, 2-3 minutes per side.  Reduce heat to medium-low.  Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes until desired doneness.  Transfer steak to a cutting board, tent with foil and let rest for 5 minutes.  Season and spoon salsa over the steak and top with cilantro.  Leftover steak or salsa can be stored tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
