Message from Suzy Chandler, President of the Board

As a non-profit focused on supporting community to help our neighbors thrive in the place they call home, we encourage our NNN community to reach out to others, take part in local celebrations, or volunteer and celebrate the Juneteenth National Independence Day federal holiday today, on June 19. What will you do to take part and celebrate this annual commemoration?

Traditions of celebration of this day to set aside and celebrate the ending of slavery widely range, and one great way to take part is to attend a local event in person, or online. Here’s to all of us continuing to learn more about our neighbors and celebrations of importance.

Online

ACLU Washington: https://www.aclu-wa.org/pages/juneteenth-2024

June 19, 2023, from 4pm – 8pm. at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N https://www.shorelinewa.gov/Home/Components/Calendar/Event/17973/

Edmonds: Seattle actress, public speaker, and master storyteller Eva Abram will tell the Juneteenth Story in a special presentation at the Juneteenth at the Beach – Celebrating Freedom event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at  Edmonds Waterfront Center, 220 Railroad Ave., Edmonds. Meet "NNN Membership Director; Sandy Moy”

(Sandy and her late husband, Al featured above)

I came to the interview with Sandy Moy prepared to learn what makes her tick. Instead, she wanted to discuss what makes NNN hum: “It’s the members who are willing to share their amazing stories and wonderful ideas while receiving and giving services and participating in activities.” I was able to convince her that she should share a bit of herself as well.

“Like going on a vacation, you can have a wonderful time or you can come back with some good stories. I have had a wonderful life. A person who enjoyed living alone, connecting with another loner and finding joy in living together. Having a fascination with math and finding computers, becoming a computer programmer in the 60s in one of the few places where being a woman was not a handicap (the University of Illinois). Loving outdoors and finding the northwest mountains where we backpacked for a couple of weeks at a time, making the long drive each summer until a headhunter called about a job as UW director of computing services that we could not resist. Elected to the board of a large computer users group that required us to travel to many places in the world, and enabled some wonderful vacations. And then when my husband died and covid hit the following month, having just gotten involved in a wonderful organization to occupy my mind and daily activities. I joined NNN to help others. Turns out, *I* was the one who was helped.”

As someone who is our Membership Director, volunteers more hours a week than I sleep, has been on the Board, was part of the formation of NNN, and loves participating in many of our of our social activities, Sandy is eminently qualified to relate the origin and the evolution of our NNN community.

When Sandy first heard about the Aging-in-Place concept in 2018, she was attracted to the idea of volunteering now and then, not being locked into specific days and times. Along with staffing and funding issues, one early challenge was choosing and developing the best tech platform to match the needs of the community with those able and willing to provide services. Having a background in computing, Sandy was glad to take this assignment.

NNN started providing services in February, 2019, with less than two dozen people. There was much uncertainty and doubt, and few expectations. Would people join? Would there be a balance between those requesting and those offering services? The pandemic arose in early 2020. Yet in spite of, or perhaps, in part, due to it, the NNN membership doubled every year for three consecutive years. Today, thanks to the vision and diligent efforts of many people, there are now over 400 people participating in NNN.

Sandy says there is a common thread amongst the NNN membership. As she hears the stories and learns more about each member, she realizes our members are the neighbors whom others have always counted on to lend a hand, to show up, to be there when needed. Now some of us need some help ourselves, while still having the desire and ability to help others. Sandy derives pleasure from observing the diversity of our membership: all ages, socio-economic statuses, backgrounds and predilections. The NNN concept remains a diverse demographic of neighbors being there for neighbors as a community network. Now in our sixth year, NNN has become ingrained into the fabric of social services which many within our communities depend upon. We continue to form and maintain alliances and partnerships with other social, senior and emergency service organizations.

A precept of NNN is to place value on independent living, especially as we age. As Sandy points out, we have come to realize the paradox is this. It is through recognizing and actualizing our interdependence that we achieve the independence we cherish so dearly.

Now for this month’s recipe:

Creamed Carrots - serves 4

 2 lb carrots

 1 tsp salt

 4 tbsp butter

 ½ tsp pepper

 4 tbsp onion

 2 tbsp sugar

 2-3/4 cup milk

Peel & slice carrots, cook covered in a small amount of water over medium high until tender.  Melt butter in a separate pan over medium high, add onion and saute until opaque.
